Somehow I’ve also suddenly found myself in the strange role of being a man in midlife haha. Not the guy going to the newest clubs or pretending to set trends anymore, but not exactly ready to become beige either.

That change interests me too. What happens to identity, curiosity, confidence, attraction and the way other people see you when you quietly move into a completely different chapter of life?

I’m fairly private and shy, and probably much quieter on the outside than the amount of stuff going on in my head would suggest.

Curiosity, pushing boundaries and exploring things I don’t completely understand yet are what drive most of my own work now.

I’ve always been drawn to artists and filmmakers who are willing to leave imperfections, discomfort and awkwardness in the work instead of polishing everything away. Lars von Trier and the old Dogme idea probably sit somewhere in the back of my head there. Not because I want to copy the style, but because I like the basic thought that the person and the moment should matter more than the machinery around them.

Sometimes the result is a simple portrait. Sometimes a strange idea. Sometimes something beautiful, funny, uncomfortable, provocative or difficult to categorise.

I’m definitely bored with, and more or less done with, simply repeating classic poses and familiar formulas. This chapter as an independent artist should be used to explore, learn, discover, surprise myself, occasionally shock myself, get things wrong and see where an idea leads.

Sometimes you explore something and afterwards think: okay, that was difficult, interesting, I learned something. Done.

Other ideas open another ten doors.

Those are usually the good ones.

I use whatever serves the idea. A modern camera, an old camcorder from a second-hand shop, a phone, a Polaroid, natural light or a carefully lit room. Gear matters when it helps. It isn’t the point.

I work small and independently, usually directly with the person in front of the camera.

The people I enjoy working with most aren’t simply good at posing. They bring something of themselves. They question things, suggest things, disagree sometimes and occasionally turn an idea into something neither of us expected.

They can be strange, eccentric, shy, loud, brave, insecure, funny, attentive, caring or a complete mixture of everything.

Most importantly, they are themselves.

I’m much more interested in the human being underneath the polished model version than in maintaining the facade.

High production quality does not have to look highly produced.

Tell me a little about yourself, what kind of photography interests you and where you are based. If I think there may be a suitable project, we can discuss the concept, location, compensation or collaboration terms, image usage and anything else relevant before deciding whether to work together.

Paid assignments and collaborative projects are both possible depending on the project.
